Yume? Yes. Definitely.
My boyfriend and I would consider ourselves a "foodie" couple as well, but perhaps in more of an authentic laid-back Austin sense. We Loved Yume. I strongly believe that it is the Food that makes a great restaurant and everything else are details to be worked out. We were delighted on All accounts. Not my best sushi experience
I went to Yume Sushi with a large group of sushi lovers. We went for happy hour, but had to wait nearly an hour to order, so happy hour was not fully enjoyed. The place does feel a bit like an empty warehouse inside. I had a hard time finding really distinctive fusion dishes on their menu. I ordered some pretty standard rolls, tempura sweet potato, salmon and a specialty "dragon" roll. The dragon roll was pretty good, and I would recommend it. As for the rest, they were kind of boring. I might have given an average or perhaps better than average rating, but the whole experience became disastrous when we received the bill. When we first ordered the waitperson agreed several times to give us separate checks. Instead he brought us one big check at the end of the night. We had to split this up ourselves, and it was taking forever. He said the manager insisted he do it this way. The manager denied it and then later said it was their policy not to split large checks. Why then, did he agree to it twice before we ordered? Finally I offered to pay a large portion of the bill to move things along. This final event ruined what might have been a mostly positive dinner. With all the sushi places Austin has to offer, I really believe Yume Sushi is below average.Best Sushi in Austin, and maybe even Texas!
Now, I've already written a review for Yume elsewhere on the net, but felt it imperative to spread the word of what I personally consider one of the best sushi dining experiences in Texas. Being a native Houstonian and traveler of East Asia, I've eaten quite a few delectable pieces of sushi and must say that the sashimi and sushi rolls at Yume are on par with the best sushi I've tasted anywhere. My personal favorites at Yume are the Ebi Criente roll, which is a meal in itself, and the Suzaku, which is Chef Dmitri's personal creation.Don't go!
I rarely have bad dining experiences in Austin or anywhere for that matter, I'm pretty easy to please. We went to Yume b/c we wanted sushi and it was convenient. The people were friendly, the decor was fine and it was sushi happy hour - good so far. We ordered miso soup to start, it arrived in a fancy shaped bowl, but lukewarm at best. We told our waiter, he told the chef, he returned to say the chef said the bowls were cold and had turned the soup cold. I did not observe any ice crystals on the bowls. Moving on, we ordered a spicy tuna roll, the roll of the day (shrimp tempura), alaskan roll, and a roll off the menu. The menu roll arrived first, it was supposed to be a warm roll, but it was cold. The alaskan roll came without cream cheese in it. We told the waiter, he told the chef and the chef said we must be thinking of a Philadelphia roll - they don't even have a Philadelphia roll on the menu. We showed the waiter the description of the alaskan roll and he took that to the chef. The chef said it was a misprint on the menu and had been that way for a while - then correct the menu or serve what it says - right? I won't bore you with the rest of the mishaps, but this morning my friend called me to say they added 25.00 as a tip onto his credit card. We left the tip in cash on the table. OK now that is not something I can overlook, hence this review. Maybe they just don't know what they are doing over there, like they don't know how to make sushi or use a credit card machine, but give me a break.Best sushi i have ever had in Texas
My family and I stumbled upon this place right before they closed, but they ushered us in anyway. We were suprised by the lunch time prices, they were pretty expensive. However once we tried the sushi we figured out it was worth every cent, the fish was very fresh and the waiter told us they buy all their produce from local farmers markets. I am going to return for Happy hour becuase we were told that most sushi is aound $4-$5 per roll....thats almost half off. If you ar looking for wonderful sushi and don't mind paying a little more then normal than i recommend this place.Delicious!
GREAT sushi! Not much ambiance, but that's not a big deal. It could be easily fixed if they just worked on some mood lighting (even just dimming the main lights). Back to the food- it's great. We were supposed to get dessert after dinner but vetoed that idea in lieu of another sushi roll. Great service, also. I will go back again and again. Some of the friendliest staff
