Church for the oddball Catholics

This parish is active in the issues of social justice, and has helped do good things for disenfranchised persons. Parents with boisterous toddlers often choose to sit in the choir gallery so that their children can crawl around on the floors without bothering anyone. Eucharistic ministers bring the bread and wine up to the gallery so that frazzled parents do not have to make their way through long lines downstairs. Parishioners stand, not kneel, during the consecration, and the crucifix on the wall disappears during the Easter season, but as liberal Catholic churches go, St. Therese is a good place to attend on a regular basis.

PROS: welcoming to gays and lesbians and doesn't require you to vote Republican
CONS: No kneeling at the consecration of the Mass.

Most un-traditional Catholic

This church wins - hands down - the award of most un-traditional Catholic church. I've been around traditional Catholic Masses my entire life and was surprised to see myself land in this house of worship. Very friendly parishioner body. Sometimes crosses the line in politicizing...I didn't think they were supposed to do that? Different strokes for different folks. The children's preschool program is well worth checking out.

Cobbled liturgy...

On Liturgy: We do at least need a new liturgical consciousness, to be rid of this spirit of arbitrary fabrication. Things have gone so far that Sunday liturgy groups are cobbling together the liturgy for themselves. . . . The most important thing today is that we should regain respect for the liturgy and for the fact that it is not to be manipulated. Pope Benedict XVI
I attended this church last spring and was amazed that it called itself a Catholic church. The liturgy was like a new age friendship club. Actually, being a fairly recent convert to Catholicism, I found my brief visit very upsetting and I've been praying for the people and priests of this church ever since. I read this quote from the Pope this evening and felt I should at least warn anyone considering visiting this church (people were talking loudly before the service and one woman even sat on the back of my pew on my shoulder!) The music would have been perhaps a bit more appropriate in a nightclub, but if you'r

Love this church

I'm a lapsed Catholic (but well practicing Buddhist) and I go to this church a month out of the year when my dear old mother visits. I went to Catholic School for 13 years so I do have a comparison. I LOVE THIS CHURCH. Its obviously gay friendly and is very multi-cultural. The sermons are contemporary and there is a lot of community participation and input into the Sunday Services. I give this place an A. Good Church!
