My name is Gwendolyn Porter and I was one of six individuals enrolled in the Commmunity Health Worker Program initiated by The Ocean Bay Community Development Corporation. The program introduced aspects of population health and community health. As a health professional by trade, I was very eager to learn that by educating community residents of wellcare and preventive care, the local population will live longer and the informed resident passes this information to other residents. My favorite part of the program was Epidemiology which is the study of the causes of diseases. I was amazed to know that disease epidemics 1700's and 1800's could have been prevented by the washing of hands and availability of clean water. Learning the origins of food preparation and packaging by food conglomerates was eye-opening. I also learned that some of these products can have a negatve health effects within the population.
