Gay-Owned Veterinary Practice

Dr. Robert Nagel and Dr. Gail Todd have been taking care of my lab/mix, Maude, since she was 6 weeks old and now she is 10 years old. They have given excellent care for Maude, are caring and compassionate and are in a location that I frequent. I would highly recommend them.

Very helpful and friendly

Dr. Nagel is very thorough, and the staff are very friendly and helpful. Every question I've ever had about my cat has been answered. Unlike some other vets I've come across, he never cuts corners nor rushes you out the door. We adopted a kitten from the humane society with a stubborn upper respitory infection. The doctor has been extremely informative, given me all options I had, and has been helping us make decisions on her treatment. The office is clean and doesn't smell like a vet. My overall exeperience has been more than satisfactory.

PROS: Our cat gets as much attention as we do at our doctor's office.

Excellent Care and Response

In an emergency they always tell me to come right over. Fairly priced (they even have a weekly discount day for routine vaccinations) and very knowledgeable!

Excellent Care

Dr. Nagel is genuinely concerned about my animals and I have been a client for 10 years. The staff was very helpful with and saved my cat, Milton's life when I brought him in on an emergency after leaving another vet's office. He was dehydrated and not eating. Dr. Nagel and his staff hydrated him and sent us home with an appetite enhancer. My poor little guy barely made it - I am so thanful they were there to take care of the situation. He lived for 5 more years to the age of 18.

Excellent veterinary care!!

I've been taking my dogs Taffy and Peanuts to Drs. Nagle and Todd for 16 yrs. and 6 yrs. respectively. They always explain what's going on very thoroughly. They are reasonably priced. They truly care about your pet and you. You can have complete confidence that your animal is getting the best care available. The staff is great, very friendly, outgoing and skilled. You will not find better doctors to care for your beloved pet.

Shoddy Care at Pacific Vet. Service

I used this vet for 12+ years for my Jack Russell Terriers, Zoe and Zachary.

No problems until Zoe, about five years at the time, developed a pyoderma-type rash. Dr. Gail Todd dx'd allergies (based on, a guess?). After seeing a dermatologist and, finally, a homeopathic vet, she was dx'd with hypothyroidism. With supplemental thyroid hormone, no further skin problems.

Unfortunately, I didn't learn from Zoe's experience.

Zachary was 10 years old when I noticed a lump behind his knee, and being due for his check up and dental, I brought him in. He also seemed to have lost weight.

Indeed! He had gone from 22 to 17 lbs. the tech. noted with some concern.

Dr. Todd thought the swelling was due to an infected tooth, which she removed. Blood test came back with high lymphocyte count, thus, she thought, confirming the infection. Zack was sent home with antibiotics.

He finished the course of antibiotics, and, when he was brought in to remove the stitches in his mouth, I asked to see Dr

Great service, caring people

I have used this office for almost 20 years and I have always received great service with all of the animals I bring in, rescued or not. My questions are always answered, and I feel that they are fairly priced. I would recommend them without reservation. Most recently my 19 year old cat had to be put down because her kidneys gave out. She had a dignified end to her life and I am thankful for the folks at Pacific Veterinary.

$Benjamins$

I operate this veterinary clinic, and we do not have any vets fresh out of high school. Between the vets who work here we have combined over 50 years of experience. I did not hear anything from this person about any reaction from vaccines. If we hear of such a vaccine reaction from a client we address it and resolve it with no charge. Our vaccine prices have been raised only three times in 20 years, and are very reasonable. In fact, I believe they are the lowest in our area.
Our fees for all other services are also very reasonable, and we always advise owners of all of their options and and make recommendations based on the needs of the pet. Sometimes people take offense for one reason or another, but I have never had anyone claim that we care more about money than the well-being of the pet (or owner for that matter).
The tone of the $All about the Benjamisn$ review below seems inaccurately biased for some reason that is not easily determined.

Dr. Nagel is trustworthy, patient, kind with my Sheltie, Atticus

Choosing a Vet. is not as easy as you may imagine; friends give advice, posters, advertisements scream out to you. My handy-honey-do-man, Howard Edelman, recommended Dr. Nagel to me. "He's fantastic." That's all I needed to make the change from Banfield to Pacific Veternary Services, on Univeristy Ave., S.D.. This understated, soft spoken, albeit handsome, man was generous with his explanations, suggestions and most of all, with his spirit. He intuitively reached for my Sheltie's paw, that had been a 'bone' of contention for two days, and gently removed an unwanted invader/foxtail. Since that day, Dr. Nagel has been open to any suggestions/concerns I share regarding, Atticus, my Sheltie from Life's Storms. A recent storm was when Atticus, suddenly, without any apparent cause, became, "lame". A visit with Dr. Nagel comfirmed a spinal anomaly that needed to be monitored and an equally troublesome Left Knee problem. No surgery would be indicated for the time being, but a change in lifestyle was imminently the prescription. Dr. Nagel's calm, reassurance melded with his gentle candor were inspiring and most appreciated, at this difficult time. Atticus was just turning four yrs. old when this prophetic STOP/WARNING sign appeared. Thanks to Dr. Nagel and his Staff, Atticus and I are on a different path towards healing and avoiding any further harm. You can be certain of quality care, honesty, no un/necessary surgery and a very soft touch. Thank You, Dr. Nagel, form Atticus Nobel and his adoring mommie/ (me). ^l^....kisses....

Horrible experience

I took my cats to Pacific Veterinary Service (which Dr. Nagell is a partner in) for a year on the recommendation of friends and on reviews from sites like this. I thought I was getting good care for my pets, both of whom had chronic renal failure from eating tainted pet food in 2007.

I now believe that the care I got led to one of my cats dying an early death that was preventable and needlessly painful. My pets mostly saw Dr.Todd, though in the last days Dr. Nagell talked with us about test results. Dr. Todd, while perfectly pleasant, did not seem to take my concerns about my sick cat not eating very seriously, leading me to believe that if I could get him to eat anything, he was doing okay. This led to him not getting enough calories and turned quickly into hepatic lipidosis, a consequence she never mentioned.

When the cat got sicker and was brought in, Dr. Todd seem to lean toward the conclusion that "something else" was causing the liver problem (not the lack of food). She again never mentioned that hepatic lipidosis was possible.

A simple web search on CRF and liver told me what my vet should have from the start -- that if the cat does not get enough calories for even a few days, hepatic lipidosis (a painful and often fatal condition) is the result. I had to suggest force feeding, she never did. By then it was too late.

Dr. Nagell saw us about our other (tummy-challenged) cat and talked about the sick cat's test results. His bedside manner was, frankly, offensive. Worse, it was only at this point -- the point where the cat was so ill -- that they gave us phosphorus binders or vitamins.

The treatment for the well tummy-challenged cat was not much better and I was appalled at Nagell's rough handling of my pet in the exam room. He was in pain afterwards just from the prodding.

I took the sick cat to a different vet a few days later and in their much more compassionate care had him put down.

I will never again take my animals to this vet.

Fast treatment - positive experience

We received this vet clinic recommendation from an employee at a pet supply store. Pacific Veterinary Service was a really good place to take our cat. Our cat was suffering for three days already, we saw two vet clinics with bad reviews. Pacific Veterinary was our last hope. Driving directions were good. Parking was any place you could park legally. Desk workers were very nice ladies, friendly, concerned, and caring. They squeezed an appointment in the morning schedule for our cat. The waiting area had good lighting, good seats and open space, shelves of current supplies of dog and cat prescription food, and cat figurines along the mantle. The nurses handled our stressed cat with gentle care (no neck grabbing, wrestling hold-downs, or loud noises). Of course, our cat is a chicken and didn't fight back. Dr. Nagel arrived quietly, examined the patient, and squeezed his bladder for a sample (no injections). We were present, within "save me" range (no taking the cat behind closed doors). Dr. Nagel identified and described the problem to us in a soft-spoken, knowledgeable, and understanding voice. He showed us the crystals both under the microscope and from the medical book. He prescribed, on the spot, antibiotics and a prescription diet after a quick diagnosis. Previous vet clinics needed more tests that would have taken days and money for results, without immediate prescription medicine. Dr. Nagel treated the problem immediately, zero waiting, and zero suffering (for us the owners). My wife started to cry with happiness. He handed her a box of tissue and told her not to worry. That is a sign of a good veterinarian, he cares about pets and their owners. Returning to the waiting area, the nurse explained the antibiotics. The cost of the visit was 45% less than what we paid in observation and test fees from previous vet clinics.
+Nice and friendly staff. +Knowledgeable and concerned DVM.
We found a good place. Our experience here was positive.
