MECU of Baltimore was at one time a well run alternative to local banks, with consumer friendly services and very attractive interest rates. Unfortunately, and mysteriously, things have gone downhill very badly. It seems to all be traceable to a few years ago when they replaced their computerized operations with a new system. One can expect some glitches in such a case, but the magnitude of their troubles was made very apparent when a form letter went out to all members from no less than the head of the organization itself--Herman Williams, I believe, at the time--apologizing for the the mess that had been created and the subsequent headaches for customers like myself. I'm a patient person and like to give the benefit of the doubt, but I was starting to sense that either the good folks running MECU were way in over their heads or, perhaps worse, simply didn't care about their customers enough to solve the problems. What kind of problems are we talking about here? Let's see....it's been going on for so long, I'm afraid the concern that was eventually replaced with outrage has smoldered into something like apathy--what happens when a situation simply feels hopeless. One of the first things I noticed was that I stopped receiving statements in the mail. Yes, yes, I know that I could have signed up to view my statements online, but this is something that one opts for, not something that should just start happening, unannounced. I called and even stopped in person to several branches to see what the problem was, and each time was politely told that the employee would "look into it." Then, I noticed that only the minimum due was being deducted from my pay towards my personal line of credit--about $65.00 every two weeks instead of the $150 I had instructed to be taken out so that I could quickly pay it off, thus avoiding paying more interest over time. It wasn't lost on me that paying the loan down more slowly benefited MECU, Finally, a few months ago--now we're talking about late 2012--the invoices for my home equity line payments stopped coming. I'm sure I'm not alone when I say that the due dates of each one of my bills are not uppermost in my mind as I go through life. It was brought to my attention abruptly, however, when I went to withdraw $20 from my MECU savings account, the balance of which is about $2,500, and was denied the transaction. I racked my brain to figure out what the problem could have been and realized that I didn't remember sending in my home equity line payment--nor did I remember getting my bill. This saga has been going on for over two years. The last employee I spoke with at the the Loch Raven branch of MECU--very nice, very cooperative--was Jaime Shifflet, who promised me she would check into it and call me back. I waited a few days and called her back instead of waiting longer, and was told she hadn't been able to resolve anything yet but that she would keep trying and "get back to me." I realize today that my home equity line payment was due on the 3rd, and that I have yet, once again, to get the invoice. Bottom line--this is an organization, once truly an oasis of hope for the banking consumer who didn't want to deal with Big Banks, that has floundered. At this point they're worse than Big Banks, because at least Big Banks do operate with consistent professionalism even if they are always trying to stick it to us with ever mounting fees and smoke and mirrors tricks. MECU of Baltimore is simply inept and I'm jumping this sinking ship as soon as I can. Jeanne March Davis
