great food, great variet
I loved the Avocado Supreme, which had chicken salad on pasta. The pasta part was rather confusing, but, I have nothing against it. My motto is Save Room for Dessert.slow and red
Maybe there were more people than they usually get, but service was slow around 6pm on Sunday night when I went. Maybe a new chef? We waited about 50 minutes for food at which point I was very hungry. Finally food showed up. I ordered steak diane, my boyfriend ordered quail in some sauce. The steak would have been okay if it weren't so red. I ordered medium well and I received medium rare. I think the chef was new (?) because the people sitting next to us also got a rarer steak than they would have liked. I didn't send it back though, because I was afraid I would have to wait another 30 minutes! I ended up giving half my steak to my boyfriend and eating half his quail. I like the place, but the slow service and uncooked meat will probably keep me from going back.Slow Slow Slow
Went to dinner on a Monday night around 7:30pm and were one of only 3 tables sitting in the restaurant. The server was great, however the food service is EXTREMELY slow. Starters - a cup of black bean soup and "Shrimp on Ice". It came out 30 minutes later, the soup was lukewarm, and the "Shrimp on Ice" was embarrassing - it consists of small (51-60 count or so) shrimp, peeled, on ice from their ice machine. Some fall down into the water, the presentation is sloppy, and it's simply not worth the $5.99 for a dozen. The only upside is that they probably put 15-18 shrimp on the plate. We both ordered salads, which were ok. However we did ask for a side of ranch dressing, and the waiter said he would check but that they had run out of ranch A FEW DAYS AGO. Sure enough, no ranch. How do they keep the doors open?
Our experience was so bad, we couldn't help but laugh. I ordered a couple of different martinis, but the bar was out of at least one ingredient to make the drink. When we tried to order dinner, the waiter told us they were out of all beef and alfredo sauce. I ordered crab stuffed mushrooms, my husband had chicken enchiladas. Mine was very fishy and not edible what so ever. My has husband's was not much better, but the service was so slow, at this point he would have eaten anything. The owner came by and did adjust tab for one entree. We did have a passbook coupon, which gave us a free entree anyway. He didn't seem to care much one way or another if the food was bad. We went to Taco Bell on the way home, which hit the spot.Is anyone at the wheel anymore?
It pains me to write this, because my wife and I used to come here fairly frequently (even bringing guests), and the food never disappointed. Lately, however, both the food and service have slipped precipitously. A BLT showed up as one pathetic slice apiece of B, L and T, served between two pieces of dry toast. Servers sometimes forget drink orders. The chef and/or manager are not always on premises -- perhaps the owner is paying more attention to the newer eatery Veranda these days? Or are there simply too many items on the menu, and the kitchen staff is losing focus? Mesa Hills needs to get its act together in a serious way, or they'll soon lose whatever customer base they have left. It's a shame, but nobody here seems to care anymore.Poor Customer Service
Went to lunch there at around 1:15 PM, after the noon rush. Food was good but small portions. Waite staff didn't give a hoot if you were even there. Our particular waiter was very unattentive during the whole lunch and we had to wait quite some time to get our check. I was there in the 90s and loved the place but now it looks like the place is on the skids.I want to nominate this restaurant for Kitchen Nightmares!
The location is so good and the menu is good--but the food just doesn't do it! We are so bummed because we live on the north side and it would be nice to have food that was good on our side of town! I think what upsets us the most is that the restaurant has such potential--there's no reason they shouldn't be slammed every nite! If the food tasted as good as the menu described it, they would have a wait every nite. Call Gordon Ramsey!Worldwide > United States > Austin, TX > Cafes, Coffee, and Coffee Houses
