January 26, 2016: We hired Mario Saavedra to perform tile work in our home for a renovation project. Mario and his daughter Diana came to our home for the consultation. She was his translator and it seemed as if he had a lot of experience and was a perfectionist in his craft. Their bid was lower as they explained we were dealing with them directly and not through the inflated price of a general contractor. We had already purchased the tile and materials, he was going to perform labor services only. He delayed our start date by a week and showed up late the first day. His language barrier is a serious problem even in directions to the house. I had to drive to get him and bring him into the house because he couldn't even read the street signs and had no helper with him to assist. Once he got into the house and got started on the bathroom floor things just went downhill. The tile was a porcelain mosaic (arabesque) and was a total mess. His cuts had chips, were uneven both the grout lines and the level of the tiles to each other. He did not put the tiles under the transitions. The mortar was all over the place between the tiles to make it impossible to grout properly. I had to monitor everything he was doing and correct things on my own to try and salvage the job. He started on our marble back splash and the tiles were uneven, grout lines at different levels, tiles not adhered completely to the wall, etc. The original tile design I asked for he refused to work with because he was not confident in cutting the tiles and just simply told me "no". When I asked him why he said "I don't like it". I was here with him alone without my husband and it just became a very awkward situation because he was obviously frustrated and angry with me but the communication I feel is a huge reason why. I had to call his interpreter on the phone, explain the situation to her and then she called him to explain my explanation and he still didn't understand. It was a horrible experience and it seems as if tiling is not his real trade as he claims. The pictures on the website are intricate marble work and it's gorgeous but I really think it's either someone else's work or something they found on the internet and put on their website to advertise falsely. There is no way he did that job himself. He and his daughter were wonderful during the consultation and that's what really sold us on using him along with the reasonable price. Unfortunately it was nothing personal and we hated to have to fire him but ultimately we had too much money invested in our home and our renovation materials to allow him to continue. He came back the next day to get his tools, etc. which we had waiting outside for him and he crumpled our check and left a note that simply said "thank god". I thought for a man well into his 50's that this was a bit juvenile and rude but they did return our check and would not accept anything for his time the first day which we did offer several times. We simply asked to come to a reasonable number but we never heard back and just received the crumpled check and rude note. I think besides the negative review on the quality of work I would really discourage anyone from using this gentleman for his attitude and lack of professionalism. We were very disappointed in the whole experience as we had high hopes from the consultation that we were going to be very satisfied with the work and actually be writing a positive review to help him and his family gain business. We were fooled so I hope this helps others not go through the same situation with this person/family.
