Clean, Convenient and affordable gym

LA Fitness is clean, convenient, and affordable. Cleanliness is a very important factor to me. As a former 24-Hour fitness member I had to deal with machines that lacked cleaning towels or soap. This is not the case here. This gym is conveniently located near a Metro Red Line stop and only a 2-mile run or drive from my apartment in Hollywood. Parking is free! They allow you to park for 2.5 hours while you workout or shop or whatever. This gym is affordable. It is 34.99 but I received a company discount, which makes it less. My fiance was so impressed that she decided to rejoin a gym. She had left her previous gym, Bally's, because the parking situation was awful and the electricity constantly went out.

The crowd of indviduals is also just better in general. 24 Hour and Bally's has some questionable characters that happen to be members.

nice, big workout club

I've been an LA Fitness member for about 5 years. Used to work out at the Miracle Mile location, and sometimes at the Universal City location. The relatively new Hollywood facility is a different level altogether compared to the other locations. It's a great size, lots of machines, racquetball court, basketball court, Kids Club. Great classes. Even the yoga classes compare to some expensive classes I've taken at yoga studios (although I do wish the yoga classes were the typical 90 minutes, as it is in yoga studios, rather than 60 - it's very difficult to get in a good yoga workout in that amount of time).
I don't use the pool very often, but it's nice, too. Locker rooms are always clean. It's not as much of a meat market (pick up spot) as Bally's and some other clubs, but if you want to stay away from that I would recommend NOT going in the evenings. Lots of guys at that time.
The staff is very friendly, and they seem to have a lot of personal trainers. The one thing that I wish they had more of are Bosu trainers. I tend to only see one; if the trainers aren't using it, we can borrow it and return it.
There's a nice size stretching area in front of a mirror, but it would be nice if they had another stretching area, as it does get pretty busy in the evenings.
Also, as far as the layout of the club, it would have been smarter not to have the basketball court share a wall with the room where the fitness classes are held. There's a lot of smashing up against the wall on the basketball court side that makes a lot of noise in the fitness room.
The recently added snack bar - protein shakes/bars, ready-made sandwiches, etc - is nice. Delicious shakes but a bit pricey.

Nice Club, decent equipment, clean, and not too congested, what could be wrong?...

I joined LA Fitness on Hollywood Boulevard when they opened. I liked the club a lot more in the beginning when there were fewer members. Now it is pretty popular and often busy by the time I go which is around 3pm. Nonetheless, the gym is clean and the equipment generally is very good and new. So, why a one-star rating? Well, get this:

Several months ago, I was diagnosed with cancer. I had to dive in to some treatments that more or less made it impossible for me to work out. Many weeks after my diagnosis, I wrote a letter to the President of LA Fitness, LLC, Mark Stevenson, and explained my situation and asked if just to help me a little with expenses whether LA Fitness could offer me a retroactive suspension of the monthly dues. I definitely wasn't using my membership, as I'm sure their computer records could prove, and I really could use the money because I was spending about $70,000 to save my life.

Would you believe that not only did I not obtain the suspension and cost savings, I never heard a word from Mr. Stevenson. Not a "sorry, I can't help you," or "too bad, but we can't do that,"... nothing. No postcard no phone call, no email. And I'm certain that my letter was delivered: I used delivery confirmation. So, the more I thought about it, the angrier I got. I am pleased to find this venue to express my great disdain for the LA Fitness, LLC.

LA Fitness doesn't adhere to the principles of goodness that many gyms do. I've belonged to several corporate-based gyms that offer people with serious illnesses very flexible terms when it comes to suspending memberships. At LA Fitness, you have to "plan ahead," and you have to take a minimum six months' suspension. So, you think that the people who run LA Fitness LLC really care about your health? Really now... do they? In my case, all LA Fitness cares about is their bottom line; money, money, money. Think twice before joining this gym or any other gym that LA Fitness owns.

They don't care about their customers

I just got off the phone with billing because (apparently) I was just charged again for another month of membership when I have been trying to cancel it!

See, they have this policy where, if you want to cancel, you have to LOG into your account online, PRINT out a cancellation form, STAMP it, and MAIL it in. You must do this 10-20 days before you want to cancel!! It's not even like you have to fill out anything on the form. They just do this so that they can keep charging you while this form gets lost in the mail.

So naturally, I decide that I want to cancel my membership, but have to pay for another month because my billing cycle was coming up and I didn't "mail" the form in yet. Then I mail it in and see that I am charged AGAIN the next month! When I called them, I explained that I sent the cancellation form weeks ago. They asked if I had "proof of mailing"? As if I'd send a piece of paper certified mail.

They refused to refund the charges, even though I haven' been there in months. As a courtesy (more like a sl-p in the face) the guy said he'd cancel it over the phone (wow, they can do that???) but he wouldn't refund my charges.

This gym simply does not give a d-mn about people. And they have the policies in place to prove it.

Nice place to Workout

I have been a member there since July. Enjoy the large areas to workout. If one room is crowded, just move on to another. Racket ball courts are nice and usually available.
Cardio upstair can get busy, but more equipment down by the courts. Weights room is huge. Also aerobics room is available, when not in use. Nice for stretching and rope work. Pool and Sauna's are always clean. The only minor complaint are the idiots on the basketball court. But they usually stay there. Noticed it was chained shut the other day. Probably the idiots got into it with each other. Who cares, couple less idiots allowed back. Great Place!
