BEST sushi ANYWHERE
I have fallen in love with Kanpai. It is literally the best sushi ANYWHERE. I've had sushi in CA, FL, DC, and I love love love Kanpai. I often get the Maki Dinner (even for lunch :) ) It comes with soup, salad, a california roll, tuna roll and special roll. I get the salmon dream. OH MY GOODNESS it is DELICIOUS. Buying the dinner is quite affordable for sushi. I get all that for $14.00!! That's a WOW! He has awesome music, plenty of tables and a sushi bar. Whenever I'm craving sushi that is the ONLY place I will go!!

Hands down the best
Kanpai has the best sushi hands down. I have never been a fan of fish or sushi. A friend raved about the place so I decided to give it a try. I am hooked! I have taken other people to Kanpai, may who don't like sushi, and they too love it! If you go try the Mt. Trashmore roll, Crazy Monkey roll, and the Godzilla roll. If you really want to go for it try The Mother of all Rolls. So tasty!

Amazing!
I was sad to see this low rating, to me it is just a 10! I can't stay away, I come here each week for dinner. A must to order is the Tuna Cappricio, the Tuna is sliced perfectly, it's like butter in your mouth, it is soaked in Ponzu sauce, a sprinkle of Kosher salt and topped w/pinenuts. I have a couple of favorite rolls which are the Crazy monkey and the Viva Las Vegas. My man and I eat here each week (he wasn't a sushi fan until this place) He orders a Vocano bowl(spicy) and his new fav is the sumono appetizer. The sashimi and sushi platters are just so pretty when they come to the table. Everything that I have ever had is extremly fresh. I'll be going this week for sure!

Don't let the store front fool you.
As a frequent visitor to Sushi joints around the nation I found myself in Norfolk with the craving and as usual I jumped to citysearch to find a place to go. Most resturants you can tell almost right away by pulling into the parking lot wether or not you have made a good decision on your choice of chow for the night but not here. I have to say that I was a bit timid as the place looks a bit down scale and frankly being in the strip mall that it is makes it look more like a deli than the great sushi resturant that it is. This is a very nice low key place with pleanty of locals that come in over and over again. The wait staff was extreemly friendly and right on top of things. The Chiefs were friendly as well as very good at what they do, and of course the food was great. I know that I will be going there everytime I am in town.

Food is good - service is SLOW
We had (as a group of 5) gone there for lunch a few times, but today?s service was the worst. It took about 20 minutes of sitting in this small restaurant before we even had our order taken. Then to top it of there was a table of Asian gentlemen (about 10 of them) who came in after us and we served way before us. Their orders were put through the kitchen first, with ours no where in sight. I felt discriminated against! After it was all said and done ? the lunch cost us about 2 hours out of or work day.

Not worth it!!
Very thin strips of fish, over priced, poor slow service, would not recommend this restaurant to anyone!! I don't normally write reviews, but I thought people should know.

The ONE & ONLY place to get authentic Japanese food!
Sushi is an art ladies and gentlemen! And as such it is only expected that the suhi chef's take special care in creating dishes that are aesthetically appealing. And this takes time! That being said, Kanpai isn't your run of the mill fast food imitation sushi shop! This is the REAL deal! Sushi isn't about "big" peices of fish stupid! It's about the flavor and presentation. Hell, try eating sushi in Japan. No "big" peices because that's not sushi! It's about being fresh! No all you can eat BS here! Who wants to eat old raw fish anyways! Smell it next time... if it smell sweet, you know it's fresh. If it stinks like fish, you better have second thoughts! If you can't believe a guy who grew up with a Japanese mother eating Japanese food everyday, well you can keep going to your "other" places. Enjoy eating whatever it's called as they try to pawn it off as Sushi! But if you're like me and can appreciate what REAL sushi and Japanese food is supposed to taste like, then this is the only place in all of Hampton Roads you should be frequenting! Sure it may cost you a little more, but come on... we're talking the best sushi in town! Look, I've taken family to Kanpai, just off the plane from Japan, to sample the best this area has to offer. I've taken friends here just so they can sample the authenticity. My mother (taught Japanese language in Norfolk public schools, Virginia Beach public schools, and now for the DOD) takes her students here religiously! Try the Hamachi Kama and don't forget the Shoyu (Soy sauce) and you too can experience what it's like growing up Japanese in the States. Oh, and don't forget a bowl of Gohan (rice)! Drink a cup of Ocha (green tea)! And don't forget to tip em' all! They'll remember you, I promise!

Absolutely Fabulous!
I've lived in Virginia Beach my whole, long life. Lots of good restaurants, very few great ones. This sushi place is unlike all others in the greater Hampton Roads area. It's clean, smells fresh (not of old fish), the ambiance is great (they usually play JAZZ music), service is fabulous as is the food. It doesn't look like much from the outside...but on the inside it is a jewel!Worldwide > United States > Virginia Beach, VA > Restaurants
