Having sent my child - who has been in college for several years now - to the Jemicy Upper School, I would have to say that I was extremely disappointed with the education my child received at the Upper School at a cost of approximately $29,000 a year. Some of the teachers were excellent and very dedicated, but, as a whole, the Jemicy Upper School seemed to lack a good, strong leader; teachers were leaving - for reasons unknown; enrollment was declining; and the level of education offered for a college-bound student appeared to be weak in several crucial areas. As a result of those deficiencies, I was required to have my child tutored during the summer between graduation, from the Jemicy Upper School, and the beginning of freshman year in college - even though my child is a straight 'A' student. Tutoring was required in order to know: how to take proper notes - from textbooks, as well as during lectures; how to make a good outline; and how to study for exams. All of the above areas, covered by the tutor, were needed as the result of a serious lack of preparation at the Jemicy Upper School. The students had no study periods during the day between classes - they were required to take eight classes a day, back-to-back, with no breaks except for lunch. This resulted in the need to conduct meetings while eating lunch, which further stressed the students as it left them with no free time from 8:15 in the morning, when school started, until 3:15 in the afternoon when school let out for the day. Six solid hours of classes and a lunch break, which was often interrupted by meetings. This schedule left no time for a study hall, nor did it leave time for such activities as a glee club, art club, music club, etc., as one would ordinarily find in a good private school. If a student participated in any of the Jemicy athletic teams after classes, that meant not leaving for home until 5:00 pm or later. Many of the parents, and students, felt that this kind of schedule - with no study periods or free time - placed too much of a strain on the students. This was particularly difficult for those who were applying to colleges, taking PSATs, SATs, etc., and visiting the various universities that were of interest to them. In short, I would not recommend the Jemicy Upper School for a college-bound child with Learning Differences. I would, instead, strongly advise parents to enroll their child in a good college preparatory private or parochial school and hire a tutor, rather than spend $29,000 in tuition at the Jemicy Upper School.
