BAD Customer Service, RUDE Staff

My Fiancee and I went to get a bite to eat at Holman's on a Friday night. They forgot my salad and brought him a sandwich that he did not order. Instead of trying appologizing and trying to correct the mistake, we were told there hadn' been one, then a little later while trying to sort it out we were actually SHOUTED at by the waitress, "WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO DUDE!" Wow! The bartener informed us he was too busy and essentally didn't want to be bothered by us. NOT RECOMMENDED!!!

Crappy food-messed up order

Was staying at the Holiday Inn up the road and wanted 1AM food. Called in an order for a Ruben w/O-rings. I got a wet nasty sandwich with wet nasty fries. Definitely not worth it. Service is so-so.

Slow kitchen service, okay for late night burger

I've gone to Holman's, late night, after concerts. I would only recommend it if you're looking for some late night, simple food, like a burger and fries. The kitchen tends to be slow.

to make it better: fry it

I went to Holman's last night after a party in the neighborhood and it was the perfect post-drunk place to eat at 3am. It wasn't crowded at all, it had a great local feel. The waitress was nice, prompt, hot, and put up with us being drunk. My Reuben was decent, and the coffee did the trick, but the crowning glory of this establishment is the Fried Mac & Cheese appetizer. yes, that's right. FRIED MAC & CHEESE. It's as amazing as it probaby is bad for you, but of course we didn't care. I wouldn't eat it, or at Holman's, every night, but it's definitely a new addition to my list of potential neighborhood haunts for late night food.

Worst dinner ever!

A group of 3 of us had dinner there last Sunday, after hearing that they had great food. I don't know about the past, but the food and service there now are just horrible. My pop was flat, and the waitress didn't apologize or try to exchange it. The cobb salad was full of brown soggy lettuce, the chicken-fried steak was tough and gristly, with way too much gloppy paste-like gravy, and the worst was the 1/2 pound burger, cooked to death until it was dry as cardboard with no seasoning at all, served with undercooked fries dripping in grease. Our server disappeared after bringing our food and we never got the check. The only redeeming moment was after the meal when I spun the wheel and got my salad free of charge.

Come in the mornings

I don't know about the afternoon/evening crowd, but the breakfasts here are the reason to come here. The chicken fried steak is friggin huge and even though it's not the best I've had, it is definitely worth the pricetag just from sheer quantity. The garbage omelette is great too. This place is good for watching a game in the afternoon but the service can be spotty. It's much better in the morning when they're serving more of the neighborhood crowd. I'd sit outdoors if it ain't raining, the interior can get a bit smokey depending on who's around. Definitely has a great feel for hangover food that'll perk you up for the rest of the day; if that doesn't work, have a vanilla stoli screwdriver. If you're a morning drinker or an alcoholic, this place can be your personal breakfast heaven. For the lunch crew, the patty melt isn't to die for, but it's enough to at least get a foot run over or something for.

Horrible and slow

Three of us came in around 1:00 P.M. on Sunday, August 06 and sat ourselves at the back patio. The patio is very nice and that is the only thing good about this place. Evidently we just missed quite a breakfast rush. Many tables were un-bussed and remained that way for over an hour. Our server was un-attentive and did not get one of our orders right. A table of six next to us did not get any of there orders correctly either. My friend and I ordered chicken fried steak and it was very tough and had little flavor (and at $9.95 this is absolutely not worth it, even though it is quite large). My other friend had a garden burger and a salad (salad is extra as the burgers come ala carte). The lettuce was frozen. We had to ask repeatedly for more coffee and water and when we were done the server didn't ask us how our meal was. After we finished our meal we finally went in to pay our tab after waiting outside for about 15 minutes with no sign or our server. We than had to listed to her complain to the cook about how a "customer" wanted his food cooked, very unprofessional. We will never go back.

Bloody Mary Sunday is the reason to eat here

Holman's is not a place to go for a nice dinner out or even lunch. However, the Bloody Mary Sunday here cannot be beat. You pick the vodka and they let you do the rest. The shots are generous (I have had to ask for a tall glass because mine was too strong!) and the choices for bloody mary mixin' are plentiful. They have every kind of mix you could want, all the trimmings from onions to asapagus to worcester to tabasco and more. The food here is so-so except for a few choice items, like the cheesy brats and the home potatoes, which are loaded with seasoning and peppers. Go after a hard night of partying Saturday night for some yummy Bloody Marys and big plates of food. Go later in the day if possible (breakfast is served most of the day on Sunday) because the crowd is big earlier in the morning. The service here can be slow, so I always sit in the bar where you can simply wave to the bartender when you need a refill on your bloody mary.

Classicaly Poor

Tried once for a late night bite. Poor service, dirty booths, oddly trashy crowd (and I live in the neighborhood) and horrific food. I took a glance into the kitchen and was reminded of a scene from Saw II. A classic example of what is wrong with far too many Portland restaurants.

Perhaps their dinner time situation is different, but I am not going to bother to find out.

Not a Terrible place for a drink and cheap burger.

So a friend and i went here bc its right across the way from the Laurel Theatre. The reviews on here were pretty harsh. It is a bar. It is a bar that serves food. It was alright, i mean, it went with the cheap drinks. The wait staff was real nice, but in a bar, the wait staff never has to be "real nice." The eatable food goes with the cheap drinks in an atmosphere that is easy enough to chat and be kinda loud, but its busy enough that its ok to yell.
Its not a bad place give it a shot if you are in the local.

Friday Night Blues Show Rocked the house!

Hadnt been into Holmans in awhile & stopped in on Friday night & had a great time. They had blues playing which I learned they have every Friday night & the place was going off! People were even standing up & dancing in the isles! I had a great time & even got a chance to try those Mac & Cheese things that everyones always talking about. Look forward to next week when I was told by one of the servers that the music will be on the back patio.

Best Bar Tenders

So, I come to Holman's to escape the coolness of the neighborhood, like I have been for the last five years. I have a drink and eat some great food (try the French dip!) So, I came in on Monday night and sat at the bar. My Bartender Rob was unlike any in the neighborhood. He was nice, cute, funny, spoke of good politics. And very eager to serve me... this all is a very uncommon trait in bars these days (especially in this neighborhood. blah!!!!) Most bartenders are so "cool" that you have to like be a hipsterass to get semi and I do mean semi good service. Just when I thought all was lost, Holman's saved the day once again. Most bartenders at Holman's are cool and by cool, I mean not too cool to serve you like you deserve.

Great Patio!

As a professional landscaper, I find it hard to enjoy a scerene environment, let alone a outside patio that I can drink at with my friends at. The fireplace, waterfall, and the cool dead tree (where'd that come from anyways) makes Holman's the best patio I've seen!...Might even have to admit its better than my backyard! Truely the token treasure of the hood- even though I would like to keep it a secret, props, well deserved. The hot waitress brings replinishment before my Makers is empty and the sweet potatoe fries with a side of home made Roughford is bomb. Check out Holman's but stay inside the patios mine!

late night eats

I only go here if I'm hangin out in SE, and only after I've stopped at a few other bars. The food is kind of pricey, but it's large portions. The mac & cheese bites are pretty tasty. Also, the crowd is pretty funny, everyone's usually pretty buzzed so you might catch someone actin a fool, or a sweet fight. Last time I was there, there was a fight, or a prelude to a fight you might say. One guy says "back off, you're looking at me like you're on acid", and tempers flared. Hilarious!

Many a Brilliant Idea Developed over Brunch

Holman's is a dive bar, all night diner with goofy drunken people, three in the morning when you can't see going home just yet, Sunday morning brunch with a good pal developing brilliant business ideas and subsequent meetings to close the deal, sort of place. The wait staff is vaguely friendly and decent, but they leave you alone to chat and are usually available when you need them. The food is diner mediocrity perfected. The wheel spinning is cute and kitchy, as is the decor, which only adds to its general good vibe. This is a great Portland place.

Warning Drunk People and Too Local

Well I'm guessing from reading the reviews that the staff takes after their owner. Here is my experience. Along with all the other complaints which are true: Service is poor like being a snooty is a cool thing, Food subpar (I mean what do you expect at 2 in the morning, anything's really good) but I did wait nearly an hour. BUT here is where it gets interesting. So after our food we started to eat and a group of four came in, one man being extremely large, probably 350 pounds. I didn't really notice his weight until he was half unclothed and prancing around the bar/grill sweating like a pig and lip syncing Bohemian Rhapsody! It was funny at first and no one seemed to mind not even our server, who obviously was friends with the bunch of locals. But after a spell of that and him engaging our table of 7 it was quite annoying to say the least. One of my friends addressed our server saying "Hey this is unsanitary, and rude, and even more ignorant of the staff not to do anything about it" he asked for a discount for the long wait and the ruckus of the fat man, she simple said no and went away. My friend came back to the table and was expressing his distant for the whole thing when the overweight Karaoke singer came up and confronted him with force and aggression. The server stepped in front and a screaming match ensued, along with his entourage waiting for a fight to break loose. The server slipped away to fetch a manager (if you can call him that) and the only thing he asked is if we had paid and if we had to get the F*&$ out. All this time my friend simply saying that the whole thing was unsanitary and inappropriate, we left got in our cars to 4 screaming locals telling us to go back to Arkansas! Moral of the story, Portland is weird but drunken locals are dangerous. I will be doing everything in my power to spread the word of the unsanitary and hostile environment with the lack of control that the staff and locals displayed! WILL NEVER RETURN AGAIN.
