Best Thai in town

My wife and I just LOVE this place. Owner is sweet and attentive. Service has always been excellent. We drive from Longview, WA just to eat here. MAN OH MAN!! We always try something new and have NEVER been disappointed.

Thank you Mai Thai for being so Gooooood

This is the best Thai food I have ever had in Portland. I eat Thai food a lot, and try many different places, and used to have other favorites until I discovered Mai Thai. What makes it so good is a combination of fresh, delicious ingredients, perfect preparation, incredible flavors and textures, charming and knowledgeable staff, and a menu that serves many items I've never seen anywhere else. In the past 2 months, my husband and I have been to Mai Thai about a dozen times, and always wind up ordering 3 dishes... You do the math. Although I will say, I have favorites that I've revisited several times, especially the Moo Ping Pork, Larb salad, and Drunken Noodles. You know how a lot of Thai restaurants put out a wide-noodle dish and it gets all gloppy, and the noodles stick together or get mushy? At Mai Thai they are frickin' incredible, perfectly cooked, and the prawns and veggies are perfect as well, never mushy, rubbery, or overdone. It is really a delight to dine at Mai Thai.

I hesitate to mention how good it was....

Since my favorite Thai place closed 3 years ago, I have been on the hunt for a replacement, and last night I may have found it. The food and service were fantastic! Tasted very authentic--not dummed down for the Western World palate. Medium spicy is just that--a nice slow burn that lasts on your lips for a few hours, as a reminder of the fantastic meal. Presentation was colorful but not pretentious, atmosphere relaxed, but formal enough for special occassions.

My only hesitation in writing this review is that it will become so popular that I won't be able to get it without a wait. Yummy yummy in my tummy, I will definately be making this a regular stop.

No air conditioning!

This restaurant looks okay, but we couldn't eat there. It's 100 degrees in PDX today and they have no air conditioning. I walked in and felt like I would die from the stuffy heat. When it's record heat outside and a hot kitchen inside, how can you possibly expect people to eat there? hot!

Mai means Silk

Since they opened, I've become a regular. There is an artist in their kitchen. Not only does the food look stunning, but the flavors are nuanced, everything is fresh and delicious. Yes, I order mild--because Mai Thai's "medium" is at the upper edge of my tolerance--I'm a bit of a spice wimp. If I go with someone who likes more spice, we ask for the spice caddy so people can add the spice to their taste.

The first time I sat down and ate at Mai Thai, I felt like I was in one of my favorite restaurants in Chiang Mai. This is what good Thai restaurant food tastes like. In Thailand.

The tofu soup is a delight--subtle, light, in a wonderfully flavorful chicken broth that must be freshly made. The papaya pok pok is always delicious, with crisp green beans and tiny juicy tomatoes hidden like gems in the artful pile of slivered papaya. The fish dishes are wonderful--various preparations of whole fried fish, crispy on the outside, flaky on the inside--exactly like we had served to us on the banks of the Mekong. The pra-goong makes me wish I could eat it every day--huge fresh perfectly grilled prawns served with a savory lime juice, mint and lemon grass dressing that is given depth by a wonderfully smoky chili paste. The tea is infused from whole herbs or flowers. No tea bags. One odd thing--the pad thai is more like a curried dish than a regular pad thai--good, but different from what you'd usually expect.

I could go on and on. Absolutely try the specials! I take my friends and family there, and everyone is always extremely happy--including my sister's Thai girlfriend. And they deliver!! So when I'm too lazy to walk the 6 blocks in the rain, I can have them bring the beauty to me. (For delivery there is a $20 minimum--not a problem for me, I'm happy to have leftovers! and a $3 delivery fee.)

Anyway, I'm so, so happy they opened up right near me.

The Real Thailand Has Come To America (and it delivers too!)

Ok so Ive heard about this Mai Thai quite a bit. I was stunned by how good it really is! Ive been to Thailand a few times to visit my In-Laws and I think I might know a little bit about how Thai food should taste.

The dining room can get a little warm on the hot days (if you ve been to Thailand though this would be considered cool lol). But, dont let that deter you! This is by far the best Thai food in Portland!

After many vistits to Mai Thai on Belmont, here is what i can say:

I recommend the trying the Moo Ping as an entree. It is a grilled pork cut on a stick served with sticky rice and special sauce that tastes just like the sauce they serve in Khon Kaen!

I have eaten here on many occasions and have not had one bad experience. When we dine in, the servers are super friendly and wait on you hand and foot! Not to mention the authentic costume they wear which you will see only in a fine dining establishment in Thailand.
I have also ordered delivery from them which takes about 30 to 45 minutes in my experience and is well worth the $3 delivery charge, which if you went to another Thai restaurant for delivery would be more like $5.

They employ a local Portlandian on the weekends to answer the phones and do the deliveries which I think is really helpful to expedite the orders and ensure no mis-communications about your order during their busiest times. Unfortunately for him it seems most people like to visit the restaurant in person to experience the true joy of authentic Thai dining! So if you do order delivery, remember those gas prices and be sure to tip! He is very professional, friendly, and willing to help answer any questions you have on Thai cuisine.

In short, this is the BEST Thai food in Portland. I dont want to over emphasize the word AUTHENTIC, but from my experience, the only way to get the taste of Thailand is from there at Mai Thai.

Or you could try all the other 160 Thai restaurants in the Portland Metro Area!

Best Thai food in the city

I have eaten at most of the Thai restaurants around town and Cha Ba Thai has been my go-to place...that was until Mai Thai opened up on Belmont. This is the most authentic and delicious Thai food i've had in portland. i've been back 4 times already in the past 3 weeks! I'm slowly working my way through the entire menu.

The Mango Posse is a fabulous red curry with jumbo tiger shrimp and chunks of mango that give it a subtle sweetness to counteract the curry (which can be hot even if you order it medium....yum!) The Pad Thai (a staple of every thai restaurant) is fabulous. Every dish i've ordered has had it's own unique flavor...you almost want to eat one dish at a time to savor each individual taste.

I can't say enough good things about this place!

Used to be Great but Now Not so Much

We live only blocks from Mai Thai. In fact my dining companion & I were there on their first night. Despite too much air conditioning we perservered & ate a wonderful & fresh meal. We were so glad to be mere blocks from some of the best Thai in town. Then gradually the service started to go down hill because we were regulars & I suppose they felt comfortable with us. And in the last 2 months the food has been less-than-stellar. Finally on my last visit last week I ordered the Pad Thai. It was by far the worst I've ever had in this town. It was in a word -disgusting. So sour was the sauce I had to throw the whole thing away after the few bites that I made myself choke down because I hate wasting my hard earned money. My partner & I are done with Mai Thai. I'll give it another chance in a few months, but for now it's going to be Pad Thai down the street!
