Bad Business

I was searching for coin dealers and after going through the yellow pages came up with a list of dealers. I decided to visit Gold Dust Coins even if it was out of the way. After an hour on public transportation and cold rain; I was sorely disappointed and in near tears at the end of this experience.

When I first entered the business, no one greets me nor do they ask me if I need anything. I know they knew I was there, mind you there were 3 guys working there with one custormer. Granted I didn't expect the guy making the sale to speak to me so I wait for him to write up his sale and finish with the customer. So that leaves two other people free who are facing me but never speak to me. The place was an absolute mess! Boxes everywhere, trash on the floor, coins all over the counter and just a dim dirty place. I thought a rat was going to scurry from underneath the counter. But I came all that way to buy coins and I was determined to get them.

After 8 minutes of me standing behind the customer, the guy finishes his sale and looks up, no greeting, I ask if I could take a look at his silver dollars and get some prices. Instead of showing me silver dollars he directs me toward the silver dimes and tells me they have more value. Keep in mind I didn't ask for dimes, I knew what I wanted. He tells me what they cost and the more he talks the more impatient he gets. All I'm doing at this point is listening. But I was curious and took a look at the dimes. I then repeat my interest in the silver dollars. He then asks me if some guy from a financial show sent me there. I tell him no and then he grabs a silver dollar and hands it to me. I continue to ask him a few questions and he answers them. (I find out later he meant someone by the name of Plim who has been recomending that place to his customers.)

I look over the dimes and the silver dollar and I'm thinking I could buy both dimes and silver dollars. But it wasn't my initial intention to buy anything other than silver dollars. So I thought what could it hurt to buy some dimes? I should diversify.Just when I'm about to tell the salesman I will buy both the dimes and dollars, the person I assume was the Manager or owner; who was so busy with boxes that he couldn't greet or acknowledge me, shouts at me to hurry up and make a decision because they are very busy and have work to do. Keep in mind only 5 minutes had passed if that. I'm thinking to myself how can you be too busy for customers. And why risk a potential sale? I've worked in retail and if I spoke to a customer like that I would be out of a job. But I remained polite. I tell him I'm making my decision and needed a few more minutes, he interrupts me by saying, "NO! You need to make up your mind now." At this point I'm embarassed, upset and I came all that way and that was how I was being treated. Unacceptable!

Well the salesman that was helping me disappeared and I decided I could find better service elsewhere. I placed the coins on the counter and spent another 30 minutes on public transportation to get to a downtown coin dealer (World's Money Exchange Inc on LaSalle) and boy was I happy to see a pleasant face. The guy was so friendly and professional that I was kicking myself for ever considering the other folks on Halsted. I bought a silver bar and some silver dollars. The guy even offered some advice. Which tickled me.

I will NEVER again visit Gold Dust Coin, in my entire life. I have informed my family and friends who are coin collecters to bypass that place. I have also discouraged some people whom have mentioned that company from going there. They all agree these people are poor businessmen. I guess they're too rich for business.

Best Dealer in Town

It's interesting that someone would give these people a bad review. I have done business with this company for almost 30 years, both on the buy and sell side. As the previous reviewer stated the place doesn't seem to the most organized but neither is my desk. But I don't pick my precious metals dealer based on the "look" of their store. Maybe the problem the other reviewer has is he keeps referring to the fact that they run a poor retail establishment. Possibly. But I use them because they are a great wholesaler. Of course they don't have time for someone who wants to buy a silver dollar and a couple of dimes. But for someone serious about buying a quantity of precious metals or bullion there is no other place i know of in the city that offers the service they do. They have the tightest buy/sell spread and always have on hand materials to fill my needs. I am not a dealer but buy significant enough quantities that tight spreads mean more to me than if the store "looks" organized. They do tremendous volume there and don't have time for window shoppers. I call ahead, lock in a price for a given quantity then drive down and pick it up.

Interesting the other reviewer has friends and families who are dealers. Why didn't he go to them??? Its a good thing though he warned other unsophisticated shoppers to stay away. Who needs one of them in the way when serious customers are there conducting their business.
