great service, not enough taste...

i really wish i had something better to say. The people who work there are really friendly, and really helped me decide what to get. They had great reading materal to look at while i waited for my food, and the prices were bad at all!! only problem was the fact that there was little to no taste in the food. it tasted like i was eating slightly flavored water. some people would prefer that though.. i really enjoyed talking to the people and enjoyed my visit, but i didn't enjoy the food....

Don't believe the 5 star ratings

I tried this place because (1) I love Chinese food (2) Its close to home (3) most of the reviews were 5 stars. I honestly believe most of the 5 star ratings were written by the restaurant owners. The food is some of the worst food I've experienced in Portland. Completely flavorless and rather fatty. It was a complete disappointment. I think the empty restaurant at dinner time should have scared me away before I wasted my time. The service however, was very friendly and prompt. Too bad the food is awful.

a tough call

This is my first and last visit to this restaurant. The food itself was fine. And the service was fast and friendly. But, I took two stars away from my review for two things.

First, a number of restaurants choose to be penny wise and pound foolish. They may serve excellent meals but the extras expected that enhance those meals are lacking. I ordered a #3 combo meal (chow mein, fried rice, fried shrimp) and 2 orders of BBQ pork. But, the sauce they brought me for the BBQ pork was most certainly "watered down." Out of all the times I've eaten at Chinese restaurants, this is the first time I've seen red sauce so thin it dripped like water. I've had thicker tomato juice. And the soy sauce I was brought appeared to be watered down as well.

Secondly, the manager needs to take a class in restaurant ambience. To enjoy a meal, it's appropriate to have either no music or soft music playing in the background. Originally, the only music I heard appeared to be classical. No problem there. But then, someone in or near the kitchen turned on a portable radio blasting out Billy Idol's "Rebel Yell." And, a few minutes later, mixed in with that cacophony of sounds, I heard what sounded like audio from a movie. Sure enough, the hostess had a small portable TV on watching what looked like a Chinese-language film.

I really REALLY wanted to give this restaurant a good review. They're the closest Chinese restaurant to me and the only one close enough to me to deliver (if I wanted delivery). The restaurant was clean and appropriately appointed. And as I said, the food was good and the service was good. But, it takes more than that to make a good dining experience. And unfortunately, the Gold Bowl just didn't pass muster with me. Too bad.

delicious chinese food

Yum! I go to the Gold Bowl often and always enjoy my experience there. Prices are very reasonable for their large portion sizes, so I always have lunch the next day when I dine there for dinner. The food is flavorful and re-heats well. A creature of habit, I almost always get the sweet and sour chicken, which is incredibly moist for white meat. I've tried other dishes there as well, and would highly recommend getting some stir-fried veggies to go with your meal. I couldn't really describe what's in the sauce they use for them, but the taste is a nice combination of sweet and salty, without overpowering the food. The service is fast and friendly, and I always leave full and happy!

eater beware!!!!

Run far, far away.
Everyone occasionally craves that "good bad chinese food". Those greasy, yet still tasty dishes that are better the next day, but this wasn't even close to "good bad". Just bad.
The egg rolls were generous in size but were double battered and fried (basically just rolls and rolls of clogging grease and dough) with just a smidge of chicken parts and what may have been cabbage. The chicken bit of the sweet and sour chicken was fine, but the sauce was super thin and tasteless. The veggie chow mein was also tasteless, used canned mushrooms, and had about 80% bean sprouts.
We knew we weren't in for a gourmet meal and that's fine, but this food was just poorly prepared. The woman who was the hostess and server was nice and smiley, but that's where the good part of the experience ended. Don't listen to the positive ratings. Save your cash and head over to your nearest food court. You'll get a better deal and better food.

A lot of good food at low price

This is a restaurant serving Americanized Chinese Food. There's a big difference between "authentic" Chinese cuisine and what most Americans consider Chinese food, which is the "Americanized" type. As long as you are not looking for real Chinese cuisine; a big portion of excellent tasted food with friendly service at low price - that's what I like.

Best BBQ Pork on SE Powell!

They're one of the few Chinese restaurants that actually has the best BBQ pork on SE Powell in Portland. My wife loves Gold Bowl so we eat there from time to time for the past 15 years. Owner lady Sheri made us feel like coming home evrytime we are there. A great place for good food and family get together.

Gold Bowl Restaurant, Portland, Oregon

I have gone to the Gold Bowl Restaurant for many years, and have always enjoyed their food. We always ordered various items so that everyone could have their 'favorite'. There was always a lot of food, and we got to enjoy the left overs.....Many times we even ordered to go.....
But things have changed drastically as of about 6 months when I went in and discovered that Sheri and her husband are now retired and had sold the business.
I ordered our 'regular' items, and found the food inedible. I complained and told them I wouldn't be returning, and had I been alone I would not have paid for the meal. My son thought it was ok (and I think I embarrassed him)...so I let him take everything home.
It is a shame that they had to ruin a good thing....the sweet and sour chicken and the shrimp look almost the same, and the taste is..........bad.
Don't waste your time going there.
