Save your money

I read about this Salon in Essence and decided to give it a try. First the lady (Ruth Sanchez) overprocessed my hair. My hair was already relaxed but she wanted to make it straighter...the result was lifeless, dry, thin hair. She then advised that I shouldn't put oil on my hair. I tried but my hair was super dry...as anyone with relaxed hair knows you need moisture. She gossiped about her clients while they were in the shop but not within earshot. And when I told her I was thinking of cutting my relaxer out her reply was why would you want "nappy hair". Very pompous, not well rounded, constantly rants about how she doesn't "need" your money. My advise is to go elsewhere and not to give her your unneed or appreciated money.

Highly skilled staff..poor service

Too Pricey..Too Long: The staff is knowledgable and they make your hair look fabulous. However, the prices are outrageous. I know they have to pay New York rent but some of the things that they charge for and what they charge led me to believe that they were indeed robbing people. And the amount of time that I had to wait for service was absolutely ridiculous. I mean 6 hours, come on!!! I do recommend it if you are rich and have a lot of time on your hands. They can work magic with your hair.

When your hair needs to be "saved" this is the best place in town!

I've used the other high end salons and Ruth Sanchez actually saved my hair. The others were more concerned with hair styles than hair care and my hair began to fall out, look dull and life-less. Ruth is methodical and can take a little longer than others but I've never had a 6 hour visit and I have very long and thick hair which I relax and occasionally colour. I am usually in and out within 3 hours with extended services. The service is personal and professional. And, the cost is comparable to the other highend salons. This is not the place for a $15 dooby. Ruth is a witty person who really understands how to take care of hair and to correct damaged hair. I highly recommend Ruth and know several other people who swear by her work. I am sorry that the other users had a bad experience.

If you want proper hair care, keep on moving

I first started going to Ruth Sanchez back in 2004 when I didn't know anything about proper hair care. When I first saw her, she cried about the state my hair was in and promised she'd bring it back to life...

I stayed with her for two years and didn't see any progress. I had breakage two times apparently with her, and I never retained any length since she couldn't tell the difference between a trim and a cut! She would always cut my hair when she said she was giving me a trim to make my ends look thicker due to the damage she was doing to my hair due to her horrible relaxers!! Why were they so horrible?!She decided my hair needed the Super Revlon treatment(When my hair isn't even coarse and she too admitted herself my hair was fine)she would never base my scalp, and comb the relaxer in throughout my whole hair everytime...What stylists in their right mind does that?! Isn't that beauty school 101 a don't?!?!My scalp would burn so much, I would dig my nails into my skin just to take away the pain...and would try and hold out on having a relaxer every 6-8weeks since she said if I waited any longer my hair would break off.
Just like a recent reviewer above me,she too advised me not to use oils. Well if I don't use oils how in the world do you expect me to keep my overprocessed hair moisturized and not break off?! And when I brought up the notion of going natural she too said that I wouldn't look good with my "natural hair" and she complimented my cousin on having good hair because she was half puerto rican.

I have left Ms Sanchez, started doing my own research, and found a better salon in New York, John Atchinson is the way to go. So if you're used to paying top notch dollars for Ms Sanchez then you can afford the staff at Atchinson that actually knows what they're doing with your hair and have no qualms about you going natural. and I'am pretty sure they can teach you how to properly care for your natural locks as well!
Oh yeah, and you don't have to plan your whole day on their schedule..they don't over book unlike some people...
