WONDEFUL!
This is the best sushi restaurant I have been to in L.A. The staff is wonderfully attentive, but will also never rush you. I've sat at my table with friends for almost three hours and wasn't herded out. The food is fantastic, very fresh. The spicy tuna roll is to die for.

Sushi with Class
Shin is an elegant, sleek restaurant with some avant garde jazz and a sparsely modern art decor (one enters through a small art gallery next door). We found the mushroom miso soup and the freshwater eel to be the best parts of our meal, and thoroughly enjoyed a spicy tuna tempura roll and tempura green tea ice cream. A cold imported sake instead of the house sake is recommended. Service was crisp and friendly. The price is very slightly high, but the freshness of the sushi and sashimi is well worth it. The editorial review mentions some drawbacks, but we encountered none of them. Definitely a place to bring a date or a business dinner.

Cute, Cozy, but not extraordinary
VERY nicely done interior, and above-average ambience. Also above-average presentation with food, and perhaps we went on an off-day, but the sushi itself wasn't impressive. I'm a purist, and I appreciate simple yet elegant sushi, but when it's just simple, it's plain. Excellent service, but I would be reluctant to return here unless I was in the neighborhood.

My favorite!
I've been coming to this place for years, and Shin NEVER disappoints! The fish is as fresh as it gets, slices of fish are BIG, quality is TOPS, and service is great. I have visited many nice Sushi restaurants in Hokkaido and Tokyo but I think it's even better than some of the nicest ones. Melt in your mouth fishessss and some of the tastiest Kumamoto oysters EVER make it all worthwhile.

Average to Mediocre
Because of other reviews we drove straight to Shin from the airport for lunch. Although the service was excellent, the ambience was shabby and the fish was edible, but below average. I would not recommend.

Bring someone else's wallet, and revel
My Friend With The Big Expense Account goes often to Japan and is a sushi connoisseur. He says Shin is as good as it gets. I have some experience, less than his, and I've never had such fish. It's just a different category from most good sushi. BUT you have to let Shin do his thing. If you order the regular stuff, you'll get the regular stuff, and you'll get a $$ bill as reported by CitySearch. And you'll miss everything. When we go to Shin, my friend sits us in the middle of the bar, right in front of Shin himself, and we just let Shin work. What comes is steadily delightful. Even the wasabi is exceptional. But when you do it this way, the bill is commensurate. Definitely $$$$. I make a decent living, and I never go there without my FWTBEA to pick up the tab.

There is a reason this place is empty!
Well, years ago, this used to be a fantastic sushi bar, and then it changed name and ownership. Because there is a total dearth of sushi restaurants in Silverlake, my husband and I, though we had sworn never to return, reluctantly went to Shin last week. I'm sorry, but it's really, really bad. Teeny tiny slivers of ice cold fish on top of overcooked rice. Eerie silent waitstaff and seemingly lobotomized sushi chef. And the decor....like a scary doctors office. My husband remarked, I don't know what's worse, the food or the art. Katsu, PLEASE come back!!!Worldwide > United States > Los Angeles, CA > Desserts
