Ever had a beloved pet die in your arms? You too can have this heart wrenching experience if you seek care from Dr. Tanner. My bird was lethargic and not eating so I made an appointment. I arrived late because I got lost due to my navigation system not working and my deplorable sense of direction. When I called to say I was on my way but would be late I was informed that the doctor was in with an emergency; I replied that my bird was unresponsive so I too had an emergency but I did not know when I would arrive. When I did finally find the hospital, I was told Dr. Tanner was just finishing up with an appointment; the wait would be up to ten minutes. The receptionist queried if it was an emergency but would not tell me how my declaring the situation an emergency would be handled differently from my waiting. I told her I wanted to wait with my bird and see the doctor, not just have her admitted and leave. The other client's appointment had ended and she was waiting to check out. The receptionist then came out to tell me that the doctor had gone into surgery with the other emergency so my bird would not be seen. The patient was under anesthesia (or sedated, she used both words) and was in surgery so could not be left. I pleaded that the bird be looked at since she was dying but to no avail. I was told to drive to Bulger; I had the receptionist call to verify they see birds; they don't. I asked what type of emergency he was treating, surely it was a hit by car in critical condition or an intestinal blockage. No, the dog had an unsheathed penis! The doctor had gotten it covered before but when he went to check on him the darn thing was out again so he was rushed into surgery to prevent the tissue from dying. Anyone who knows the least bit about birds will tell you that once they're showing signs of illness it's critical and I told the receptionist that the doctor knows my bird is dying. I left and headed to Angell, where I should have gone in the first place. I called en route and was told there was no avian vet in but they would help my bird. Well, I doubt anything would have helped because she died shortly after but I cannot believe we were not helped at Boxford. How helpless I felt ; how uncaring they are.
