I came to Sovereign Health because of my addiction to heroin and cocaine, but it was mostly for opiates. I was on Oxycontin for a year and two months. It started out as recreational use and progressed from there. I went to four or five Narcotics Anonymous or Alcoholics Anonymous meetings a week in addition to my regular therapies. I also went to a place for group therapy. We were not stuck in a house all day. We also did a lot of stress reduction therapy. There were a lot of papers we went through that taught us techniques about relaxation. We also did yoga; I felt really refreshed afterward. On a typical day, I usually woke up at 8 a.m. and ate breakfast before we had a group meeting at 9 a.m. We would have another group meeting in the afternoon after lunch before going back to the houses where we could all hang out before dinner and our NA or AA meetings. We also got to do activities like shop or go to the beach. If you really want to get clean, this is definitely the place to do it. They have unlimited resources here. I was put on medications so that my withdrawal from the drugs was not really bad and really helped with it. I was not feeling like I was dying in my room. If you are serious about recovering, this is definitely the place. My overall experience at Sovereign was really good and I liked it a lot.

When I first got to Sovereign Health, I was not in a good place at all. I realized there was a problem and I needed to get better, so I made the decision to come to here. I’m always open to everything. My favorite groups were always John’s groups because I knew that I was going to get something out of it. The therapist Chris is the biggest reason why I got better. He just gets you thinking about things in a healthy way. He was very solution-based, and working with him was great. John’s groups were always good because it was about relapse prevention. The family groups were really great; we are very selfish in our addiction, but it is a family problem. Learning about how it affects your family and how to deal with your family is really important, and that’s why it was really helpful. My dual diagnosis house managers were my angels on this earth and they are awesome people with so much experience. In the darkest times I had, those two were always there to make sure that I was going to come out of it and be okay. The biggest thing that I can say to new patients is that even when you think that it is not working, it is. Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right either way. You will be given tools, coping mechanisms and things that you need to get better here. I am so thankful to this place because I got better.
