Nurturing Our Roots is a home away from home for the young child. It is a haven where each individual child can blossom at their own pace. Each day is guided with great care and love, by teacher Torii, to inspire enthusiasm, learning and social growth. Please see the website information section on our teacher for more information. Our Class Teacher, Torii Rom, is an experienced and fully certified Waldorf teacher. In addition to her warm mother spirit, Torii brings with her a strong background in biodynamic and organic farming as well as an incredible love for children and nature.
Our young students are nurtured in a warm, beautiful and loving home-like environment in a mixed age class of children age 3 to first grade ready. Nurturing Our Roots Preschool program runs daily from 8:30 to 12:30pm. The children feel protected and are secure in the rhythm of predictable activities and loving interactions with teacher. The older children become “big brother’s and sister’s,” to the youngest in class, and all the children are having the opportunity to learn very needed qualities such as waiting for gratification/patience, feelings of personal confidence/pride and learning how to really listen and be present with others in a respectful way.
We recognize that at this developmental stage, children learn through imitation and play and so teachers model reverence, respect and care in their interactions with the children and in the work of the class. Each moment throughout our day is recognized as “learning space.” Nurturing Our Roots cannot be rushed. It is the single most profound thing we can do to build a strong foundation for children. We enjoy each moment and take the time to appropriately honor one another and the growth opportunities that come up.
We prepare children for the academic challenges of elementary school by engaging the will through meaningful life activities; cultivating the feelings through the arts; developing language through story, song, and verse; and by stimulating creativity and fantasy through imaginative play. In so doing, we allow the children’s intellectual abilities to unfold naturally, so by the time they enter the elementary grades, they are ready and eager to experience new forms of learning. At Nurturing Our Roots we are dedicated to offering whole-body sensory integration support to all of our students. We recognize that all children are needing support in the area of sensory processing and finding a comfortable and harmonious home in their physical body. If we cannot find comfort, value and acceptance of who we are… we cannot find meaningful and healthy connections with others. Our teacher is working daily to bring activities and experiences to the children that “massage” their sensory needs and acknowledge the great social work that takes place in early childhood. In addition to being a certified Waldorf early childhood educator, our teacher Torii Rom, has also graduated from a professional teaching course in therapeutic education. She is deeply devoted to each of her students and believes wholeheartedly that every child is exceptional.
