This approach to medicine originated with the founder of Osteopathy, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still. He was a Civil War physician who became disappointed with the direction of conventional medicine. As a result, he began his own study of the human body. He developed an understanding of preventative medicine such as nutrition, exercise and spirituality as important elements to proper health. This developed into what is known today as Osteopathic Medicine: a concept to help improve the body's own healing capacity.
