The Kangal is a breed of livestock guardian dog (LGD), which was bred in Turkey for the purpose of protecting livestock from predators such as wolves, bears and jackals, staying with the group they protect as a full-time member. Their mere presence is usually enough to ward off predators, which they confront by barking or displaying very aggressive behavior. Although these dogs will either chase off or attack predators, they are also known to seek out predators.
These mastiff-type dogs, often referred to as Molossers, are from the Kangal district in the Sivas Province, Turkey. Although they typically have a solid, pale tan or sabled coat with a black mask, other variations include brindle or recessive black tan pattern that may or may not have either or the black mask and white markings. These color differences do not define the breed. It is the head structure and morphology that differentiate Kangal from other Çoban Köpegi. Their double-layered coats protect them from both the heat and cold while their top layer repels water and snow.
Odaci's Safak, who is from very special, old, legendary and almost extinct blood lines of Turkish Kangal Dogs in Kangal, dating back to 1893. The first purebred breeding programs for Kangal Dogs in the United States began in the early 1980s. The Turkish Kangal, not to be confused with the Anatolian shepherd dog, which although originated in Anatolia, Turkey, was developed as a breed in the United States. The Kangal dog is protective, attentive, loyal and serve as an asset to farmers and families alike.
