Biography - Ewan Mathers

My first experience with a camera was using a Kodak Box Brownie aged about 4 while on holiday on the Isle of Iona. The results were not good, but I had started something. Over the years I progressed to an Instamatic with flash cubes and then an all metal Russian Zenit, my first 35mm camera. From this point I was hooked. I really got going when I bought a second hand Nikon FE and 50mm lens for £50 - this lasted me another 25 years.

After studying for an MA in Social Science at Glasgow University, I was lucky enough to live and work on Iona for many years during which time I had my own traditional darkroom and digital photographic restoration business. While living there I photographed and wrote a book: The Cloisters of Iona Abbey , my first commercial success.

After getting married on Iona we moved to Derbyshire and eventually realised that I wanted to pursue my photography professionally. So I went back to University (Derby) to study for a B. A. (Hons) in Commercial Photography, for which I was given a first. I was also pleased to be awarded Associate membership of the British Institute of Professional Photographers, ABIPP, at the same time based on my portfolio of work.


I am now delighted to be a full-time photographer. I aim to be discrete, incisive, sympathetic, bold and creative in my photography. I look for the essence of the subject; bringing out details that others might miss. When I cover an event, such as a wedding, I look for the moments that make the day special. In the studio I am known for my creative and collaborative approach to getting the best images for all my clients.
