Dr. Bissell attended Rutgers College, where he graduated magna cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry. He then attended the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and graduated in 1985, focusing on primary care and occupational medicine until 1994, when he returned to complete his residency at the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System/UCLA-Affiliated Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program. During his last year, he served as chief resident, and after graduating, he taught there for another year before serving as the medical director of two inpatient rehabilitation units in Southern Colorado.
In 2003, Dr. Bissell established an outpatient private practice focused on pain and sports medicine. Throughout his time in private practice, he has pursued further educational goals in hopes of improving his abilities to care for patients. As a result, he also has subspecialty qualifications in sports medicine, electromyography/nerve conduction studies, pain medicine, and spinal cord injury.
Dr. Bissell specializes in sports and musculoskeletal medicine, specifically nonoperative treatment of overuse and under-recovery injuries. He became interested in this field because of his outdoor sports pursuits and because many of his friends suffered from chronic injuries. Initially, he treated these injuries in a conventional fashion, but he wasn’t satisfied with the outcomes for his patients. He investigated many different medical approaches and discovered regenerative injection therapy, which uses platelet-rich plasma as the stimulant for the promotion of full healing. Dr. Bissell’s goal is to alleviate pain and restore the involved joint or body part to its previous level of functioning.
