About Appalachian Acupuncture

Acupuncture in Johnson City
Acupuncture is an ancient art that has prevented and treated disease for thousands of years. A low-risk, effective option for those considering medication or surgery, it is also for those who want to maintain their good health. Hair-thin sterile needles are used to stimulate specific points which the practitioner has determined will both effect symptomatic relief and treat the root cause of the imbalance.

Does it hurt?
I treat children as young as 5 and 6 on a regular basis, and they describe it as feeling “kinda pinchy” sometimes, but are otherwise not bothered by the tiny needles. Often they are hardly felt and described more as a “light touch” or “warm” sensation in the area.

Does it work?
Both the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institute for Health (NIH) have endorsed acupuncture for a wide variety of conditions. Western interest in acupuncture as a medical intervention is steadily increasing and the amount of scientific research on acupuncture has expanded greatly in the past decade. There is now a growing consensus among Western medical researchers that, although the mechanisms are not well understood, there is firm evidence that many disease and pain conditions can benefit from acupuncture.
Because acupuncture supports and regulates the body’s own chemical and functional physiology, almost any health challenge can be addressed with acupuncture, including depression/anxiety, digestive issues, gynecological problems, infertility, sleep disorders, cardiovascular problems, immunity, and any general pain pattern.

Preventative maintenance
Proactive care, or preventative health care, is a relatively new way of thinking for some people. Most of us were taught to visit the doctor when we are sick or injured. But think a minute: our vehicles benefit greatly from our changing the car’s oil and rotating our tires regularly – why not give the same level of attention and proactive care to our bodies and minds, caring for them on a more regular basis so they can function more efficiently?

Health is created through decisions we make every day, over a long period of time. These include not only proper diet and exercise, but also preventative care for our “weaker” areas. Maybe we have a tendency toward arthritis in the family, a feeling of depression during winter months, or even just everyday fatigue. Acupuncture can be a great tool to bring us back to a state of enthusiastic, healthy living.
