In 1965, Lewis (Dude) McCaslin at age 43 and Viola (Vi) McCaslin moved to Redding and purchased land located at 1644 Hartnell Avenue on June 4, 1965. They signed a contract with a franchise company named 'Dari-Delite'. The families that assisted them in building Dude's are still part of McCaslin's family circle. The relationships that were made then created a bond that has lasted over three generations. The store's grand opening was on August 24, 1965. The McCaslin's later went to court and was able to break the contract with 'Dari-Delite' and changed their name to 'Dude's Drive Inn'. Why Dude's? Lewis McCaslin was a cool dude that everybody liked so his family and friends nick named him Dude. Dude and Vi sold their store to their son, Ronald (age 43) McCaslin in 1976. When Ron passed away on Feb. 25, 2015, his daughter Roxanne McCaslin (age 43) assumed ownership roles. As a third generation family business, Roxanne is in the process of displaying photos of long time employees and customers on the dining room wall of Dude's. It is her desire to let them know that the McCaslin family values and appreciates them.
