EXCELLENT Food
I was delighted when dining here at lunch not long ago. There menu is very different from other restaurants and my 3 dining companions and I all shared our meals. We were all very pleased with the food.Great Pub Food
I ate at Shebeen for the first time last week and I will definitely go again. The menu is eclectic. It includes exotic fare that is on fire with spices and the ultimate in comfort foods: fish and chips, bangers and mash etc. The atmosphere is lovely both inside and on the covered patio. Great place to have dinner with friends!Must-try
Really good appetizers and sharable entrees, interesting and unique flavors, cool bar setting with TVs showing soccer from around the world, a real gem in Charlottesville! One of my favorites
My wife and I have been going to the Shebeen practically since they first opened their doors. At first, what began as just drinks and appetizers at the bar, has grown into a true appreciation for their take on South African cuisine. Their wine and beer selection is also top-notch, a great place to unwind at the end of the day.Shebeen Pub & Braai is Disappointing
I cannot recommend this restaurant. I have had a decent meal there, both for lunch, and for dinner. No complaints on the food. The service was slow. The restaurant was loud, and smokey -- I guess if a loud, smokey place with decent food is your thing, you'll find the rest uniquely interesting. Me, I just got a headache. There are tons of better choices to be found in this town.A Taste of South Africa in Central Virginia
Specializing in Cape Cuisine (a blend of Dutch, German, Malay and French flavoring), the Shebeen is an enjoyable departure from Charlottesville ordinary, and is far nicer inside than traditional shebeens you'd find in Soweto. Expect lamb, beef and seafood dishes which include bobotie (a curried meat dish covered in an egg custard, sort of a cross between meatloaf and shepherd's pie - pronounced more like "ber-ber'-tee), samosas (deep-fried pastries filled with meats and/or vegetables) and homemade boerwors (farmers' sausages). South Africans love their "braai vleis" (grilled meats, including game) but these selections at the Shebeen are quite limited (warthog and impala just aren't prevalent on McIntire Rd.) A selection of better-than-you-expected South African wines is available, too.Worldwide > United States > Charlottesville, VA > Restaurants
