Originally from Syria, Dr. M. Tarek Al-Assi received his medical degree from Damascus University Medical School in 1986. Dr. Al-Assi completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at Cook’s County Hospital in Chicago, Illinois. He then did fellowships in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, and Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound at Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana.
Dr. Al-Assi obtained a master’s degree in public health, with a concentration in biostatistics, from St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri, and completed a fellowship in Clinical Research in Gastroenterology at Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas. While at Baylor, Dr. Al-Assi served as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Director of Endoscopic Ultrasound. Also, he contributed to clinical research with multiple publications in the areas of peptic ulcer disease and helicobacter pylori.
Dr. Al-Assi has been in private practice since 1998. His special interests in gastroenterology include colon cancer, ulcer disease, gastro esophageal reflux disease, gallbladder and pancreatic disease, as well as therapeutic endoscopy – including ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound with fine needle biopsy.
Dr. Al-Assi is board certified in gastroenterology. He is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology, Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, Texas Medical Association, and Tarrant County Medical Society. Outside of the office, Dr. Al-Assia enjoys spending time with his wife and three children, movies and music.
