He obtained his medical degree from the esteemed Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Singapore, and completed his orthopaedic residency training as part of the pioneer batch of SingHealth Orthopaedic Surgery Residents. Dr Puah's exceptional skills and leadership qualities were recognized when he became SingHealth's first Orthopaedic Surgery Chief Resident, after attending the prestigious Singapore Chief Residency Programme.
To enhance his knowledge and skills in shoulder and orthopaedic surgery, Dr Puah sought advanced training opportunities abroad. As a Visiting Scholar at Tulane University School of Medicine, Tulane Institute of Sports Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, he focused on Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, Arthroscopy, and Sports Medicine under the guidance of Dr Felix 'Buddy' Savoie III. Dr Puah also completed a specialized Shoulder and Upper Limb Fellowship at the Alps Surgery Institute, Clinique Générale d'Annecy, Annecy, France, under the mentorship of the renowned Dr Laurent Lafosse, a pioneer in modern shoulder surgery. Being the only Singaporean trained by Dr Lafosse, Dr Puah brings a unique perspective and expertise to his practice.
Driven by his commitment to excellence, Dr Puah has embarked on educational journeys across multiple countries. He participated in the 301 Hospital Joint Fellowship in Beijing, China, focusing on Hip and Knee Arthroplasty, and completed a Visiting Surgeon Program on Elbow Repair & Elbow Arthroscopy at Asan Medical Center in Seoul, South Korea. He also had the opportunity to observe and learn at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Duke University, Durham, USA, during his tenure as one of the Top 3 SingHealth Chief Residents. Furthermore, Dr Puah dedicated time to attachments at the Section of Shoulder Surgery and the Section of Arthroscopy and Sports Medicine of the Department of Orthopaedics at the University of Santo Tomas Hospital in Manila, Philippines.
Dr Puah's passion for teaching and mentoring is evident in his involvement in medical education and training. He has held academic appointments at renowned institutions, including the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University Singapore, Duke-NUS Medical School, and Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine. Dr Puah has actively contributed as Clinical Physician Faculty for the SingHealth Orthopaedic Residency Training Programme and as Core Faculty for the SingHealth PGY1 Programme.
Beyond his clinical and educational endeavors, Dr Puah has taken on important roles within the Singapore Orthopaedic Association. He has served as Honorary Secretary and Scientific Chair for the association's Annual Scientific Meeting and has been a Speciality Board Member in the Chapter of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Academy of Medicine Singapore. Dr Puah also dedicates his time as a volunteer with the Handicaps Welfare Association and serves as a Reservist Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Singapore Armed Forces.
