Brooks S. Edwards, MD

Brooks S. Edwards, M.D., is a board-certified cardiologist with subspecialty certification in heart failure and transplantation. He attended Mayo Medical School and obtained specialty training in internal medicine and cardiology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He served a two-year National Institutes of Health (NIH) research fellowship studying cardiorenal physiology. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic in 1989, Dr. Edwards was a transplant fellow at Stanford University.

Areas of clinical expertise include:

• Management of patients with advanced-stage heart failure
• Evaluation and treatment of cardiac transplant candidates and recipients
• Coordination of multiorgan transplantation evaluation and care (heart-lung, heart-liver and heart-kidney)
• Care of the patient requiring mechanical cardiac support (left ventricular assist device, or LVAD, and total artificial heart)
• Cardiac care for patients receiving noncardiac organ or bone marrow transplants
• Evaluation and multidisciplinary care of patients undergoing hand and face transplantation (VCA transplantation)
• Application of cellular therapy of treatment of end-stage organ dysfunction

Dr. Edwards has led a number of initiatives at Mayo Clinic, where he served as the medical director of the heart transplant program and later as director of the William J. von Liebig Center for Transplantation and Clinical Regeneration at Mayo Clinic's campus in Rochester. He has always had an interest in consumer health engagement and was the founding medical editor-in-chief of MayoClinic.com. He is a former president of the Mayo Clinic staff.
