Renowned surgeon and urogynecologist Dr. Sherry Thomas, MD, MPH, FACOG, has been at the forefront of advancing women’s medicine and healthcare for over two decades. Located in Agoura Hills, CA, Dr. Thomas is an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse, urinary and fecal incontinence, mesh complications, vaginal fistulas, and other serious conditions unique to a woman’s physiology. Double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, she is one of the first women in the United Sates to ever receive fellowship training in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery and was among the first to be board certified when the discipline became an official medical subspecialty in 2013. Dr. Thomas additionally holds a Master of Public Health degree from UCLA Medical Center.
Having performed literally thousands of gynecological surgeries – laparoscopically, robotically, abdominally, and vaginally – Dr. Thomas’s clinical experience in the field is virtually unparalleled. Physicians regularly refer her the most complicated cases, while women travel from as far as Palm Springs and San Diego, CA for her diagnostic and surgical skill, ability to repair unsuccessful surgeries, and offer second opinions. Driven by a passion for improving women's lives, Dr. Thomas is on the cutting-edge of technology and other treatment innovations. She is one of only a handful of surgeons in Southern CA, who is certified to perform gynecological procedures with the revolutionary da Vinci Surgery Systemâ. Additionally, she is a pioneer in utilizing both laser and radiofrequency procedures for the treatment of vaginal laxity and atrophy (also called genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM), and instructs other physicians in performing these treatments.
Dr. Thomas earned her medical degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio and subsequently completed a residency in OB/GYN at the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas in Houston. She followed her residency with a fellowship in female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery at Los Angeles’ Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Thomas spent a decade teaching at UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine, jumping off the tenure track in 2000 to focus on treating patients in private practice and accelerating her ground-breaking research and charitable work. Dr. Thomas is currently leading clinical trials for game-changing treatments for urinary and fecal incontinence. She also serves as a principal investigator for post-market FDA studies on the use of transvaginal mesh for the treatment of pelvic organ prolapse.
In 2012 Dr. Thomas took her commitment to improve women’s lives to Uganda, Africa, where she provided free obstetric fistula repair surgery through a non-profit foundation she founded and continues to run called Life Changing Moments. Obstetric fistula is a devastating and preventable condition in which a hole is left in the birth canal due to prolonged labor without medical assistance. Obstetric fistula causes chronic incontinence and, most often, also leaves women with a stillborn baby. Dr. Thomas travels to Africa every two years to perform restorative surgery for women suffering from obstetric fistula. She produced an award-winning documentary on this work titled Life Changing Moments.
