ICD–10 Compliant
ICD–10 will replace the current ICD-9 which is designed to promote international comparability in the collection, processing, classification, and presentation of mortality statistics. Accordingly the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the near future expects to release an interim final rule that will include a new compliance date that will require the use of ICD-10 beginning October 1, 2015.

What does that mean to EMS services? EMS services will need to start now to plan for the implementation of the ICD-10 codes. First of all EMS services need to visit with your software vendor(s) to make sure your software is up to date and will accept the new codes and the process will flow through your clearinghouses. Currently, some EMS services use condition codes in their billing process, CMS has indicated the condition codes will go away with the implementation of ICD-10.
