Did exactly what I didn't want!

Exactly what you're looking for in a salon.

I live in Shadyside and can walk to several good salons, but I choose to drive a bit North of the city to have my hair done at Above All. It is completely woth it! I have my hair colored, cut and blown out by Tami Marie, who is spectacular. A famliy friend also frequents Above All where she, and her two daughters (1 and 3), have their hair styled by other great staff members.

Did exactly what I didn't want!

I have to say I've been coming to this salon for years to get waxing done and Julia is superb. However, I just returned from having my hair cut and the stylist they paired me up with (after I asked for someone experienced in "short hair" cuts) listened to exactly how I told her I wanted my hair cut, then proceeded to cut it exactly the way she wanted. I have short hair. It was longer all over and needed a trim. I specifically asked that the sides of my hair be trimmed but with a weight line as I didn't want her to take much off there at all. Explained in detail. She insisted she understood. I explained -- I wanted the length kept but cleaned up. When she was finished, I looked like a plucked bird. I have about 1/2 inch of hair on the sides of my head. There is no "style" whatsoever. I could have gotten this at a corner barbershop!

gREAT place... TERRIBLE receptionists

I just started going to Above all and i have to say the services are AMAZING. the employess that perform actual services on you treat you like gold. they really care about what they do and if their customer is happy. my favorites are Amy for waxing and Julia for a facial. i went in two times in 1 week, then another time the following week. BUT when i went to pay, the receptionists were so incredibly rude. they came off having an attitude from the start. They overcharged me for my services. It seemed like they didnt pay attention when i was talking. I told the woman to take 20% of the service out of my gift card i had and she gave the employee $20 not 20% when the bill was $55. When i corrected her. she was annoyed and gave me attitude. anyway all 3 times i came up to pay a different receptionist was rude in some way. It makes not want to go back there again. they ruin everything and put me in a bad mood after a relaxing day

Amazing

I had been recommended by a Facebook friend who is a regular client of Wes's I scheduled a hair appointment with Erin and have never been more thrilled with hair and well it lays and looks I never looked or felt better.

I was blown away by how helpful and informative the Front Desk girls were. So helpful when I called and so nice when I arrived. Katie smiled and greeted me so warmly. Lisa was amazing at check out making sure I made my next appointment. They literally take care of everything for you!!!! I am also scheduled for a massage and facial in 2 weeks.

It simply a breathtaking establishment and everyone so friendly and professional.

Nice decor

Every client is treated with respect and care. I look and feel amazing. The staff really seems to love what they do. They can give you the best cut and color for your style.

Great Place

Wife has been going there for a while and she made me a hair appointment with Grace.

Grace does a great job cutting my hair! Very friendly and professional and prompt.

Only problem has been the lights when you get your hair washed are too bright and your are blind after getting up if you keep your eyes open.

Avoid Sylvia

"Never ask for me again.â€ Abuse and Racist remarks by Sylvia at the Above All Spa, Wexford.
I went to the Above All Spa in Wexford, PA for a face wax last Friday. The woman who did the waxing was Sylvia, tall, thin, in her early 50's. Sylvia is tempermental and insecure of her work skills and ruined my expereince. The incident ended with her chasing me in front of the salon reception and claiming that the customer, I, was rude and I was never to ask for Sylvia again. The manager came reluctantly only after I asked the girl at the counter to get some help. The manager did not ask Sylvia to apologize for her incredible rudeness nor her racist remarks. Avoid this spa if you are dark(South Asian), have less than perfect brows and want a relaxing experience
Briefly Sylvia began by asking me where I got my services done. I told her that I did these myself but recently I had gone to Elizabeth Arden Salon and seen the work of their technicians. Thinking a professional could do it better, I headed to Above All Spa to get my face waxed. " I am curious to know how they do it?â€ said Sylvia. When told that EA strategy was to wax the face in smaller sections; Sylvia waxed eloquently on about her training and her expertise. She said it took too much time, too much effort to wax in smaller sections. (She clearly does not want to spend time on her clients.) After slapping some wax on my the side of the face, she waxed in one very large section. The cheeks turned red. She said it was because I was too dark. Most of her clients were fairer (read white). After she did my brows, she handed me the mirror. She had overwaxed my left brow which was now a thin crescent compared to the right one. When I told her about this and said we would end the waxing session. She retorted, "Well that's the way your eyebrows are.â€
Is this professionalism? Blame the eyebrows? If I had wanted this kind of service, I would have stayed at home ! I walked out the spa section, Sylvia in tow. She then began verbal abuse at the counter: "Never ask for me again. You are the rudest...â€
By this time I was very upset as I had gone to the spa, for what we women call a relaxing experience. The girl at the counter did or heard nothing; customer service at this spa is pathetic. It was only after I asked for the manager, did help arrive and stop the fulminating Sylvia. The manager did not ask Sylvia to apologize; for her racist remarks, nor for her incredible rudeness. She only waived the waxing charges which I would not have paid anyway.
One week later all my facial hair is back; waxing smaller sections does work better! Avoid this Spa completely unless you like to be abused by white, elderly women.

Overall great place just not happy with one stylist

I have been going to Above All for about 2 years. I have been going to Sheana for my cuts for the past year or so. I love how she cuts my hair and I am always happy when I leave.
The only negative thing that I have to say is: Last May I made an appt. on a Saturday with Barbie (Shaena was not available which was ok with me) to have my hair curled for a wedding. I got to my appt. on time and waited for almost 20-25 minutes for Barbie to come and get me. It was a Saturday and they were busy with high school proms, I understand that but I wished someone would have told me that she was running behind. She came to get me and we discussed how I wanted my hair and she proceeded to gossip about a certain stylist in the salon for quite sometime and making a nasty face at this particular stylist when he walked by. She was also going on and on about issues she had with other staff members. I was feeling rather uncomfortable. She just seemed very unprofessional but in the end I loved how she did my hair, was happy and on my way. I just chalked it up to a crazy day.
Just last week (Saturday April 2 Appt. time 3:30) I had an event to go to and I wanted my hair done. I was unable to get my regular stylist and they had an appt. with Barbie again. I was hesitant but took it anyway. It was like a flashback to last year: She was almost 20 minutes late - They had to page her twice and then an assistant came back and had me sit near her station while she finished up her client - She began gossiping about a stylists' boyfriend who was in the salon and their relationship, telling me to lean over and take a peak at him. She was pulling one of the assistants aside to gossip with her about this stylist and boyfriend, taking a second to put the curling iron down to talk ... When the assistant walked away she briefly said something negative about her.
It went beyond the normal chit chat you hear in a salon. Again, I was uncomfortable while sitting there.
It came up during my appt. that she was the manager of the salon --- I was floored!
In the end I didn't say anything b/c I was ok on time, just barely getting out of there in enough time to go home and get ready.
I will not go back to Barbie again. I gave her a second chance thinking that last year was just a bad day but unfortunately it was not.
Overall I have had great experiences at the salon and spa and will continue to go back.

Barbie is the best!!!!

While I hesitate to give her away to everyone because I would NEVER get in with her, I feel I have to tell everyone about her amazing styles, her gifted artistry and the fact that she really loves what she does and you can tell. I feel amazing when I leave there!!
She cares about the young staff she works with that she apparently helps train and does fabulous updos and Pittsburgh's own HOLLYWOOD hair. I have used her for longer than 10 years and have always loved my hair.......She is worth the wait!!!

Not friendly/un organized

Needless to say it was not a friendly atmosphere. It was my first time and last time that I will ever walk in those doors. The girl at the front desk was miserable. After I was sent back to wait there was all this confusion on who had who and what was going on.... Seriously how hard is it to know who your next apt is?? I was not formally introduced to the person who was going to wax me. That right there shows a lot. How the place has the name ABOVE ALL GRAND SALON .... please take a step down and remove the above all part because truly your not. Its a beautiful place with UGLY attitudes! Also you may want to consider hiring "new" staff for the front more along the lines of happy and professional :)
