I received an email from this recruiter saying he had a position to discuss. However, when I called him he immediately started slamming my resume and short work tenures. I told him that my most recent employer was contract and he yelled at me saying I should have put contract in the job title. When I told him I did put contract in the job title he said he didn't have my resume in front of him. Continuing his sharp tone he asked me why I didn't apply to two jobs he sent in December. I told him I was doing home renovations so I could rent out my house should I have to relocate. He rudely asked if I was renting out section 8 housing. I told him no. As the discussion continued he became increasingly condescending. I told him I had a Masters in ChE and an MBA. He says, "I know. You started out with a bang...what happened? Did you get a divorce?" I tried to tell him that the short tenures were company related and he retorted, "Well it looks like you got fired." When geography came up he said sarcastically, "NJ is a toilet market. Do you want to stay in the toilet or do you want to go where the action is". When I told him I'd been on two interviews in NJ he snaps back, "Well you don't get paid for going on interviews." At this point I called him out on his attitude and he then retorted, "My job is to weed out trouble candidates. I've been doing this for (20?) years and I make more now than you ever will" and then he hung up. In all of my days of job searching I have never before dealt with such ignorant and unprofessional behavior from a recruiter. While they have the right to question candidates about their past work experiences, his tone, demeanor, and assumptions about my situation were inappropriate and unprofessional. As a job seeker, I know first hand how hard it is to find the right position in this market. To then be treated in the manner that I was treated was extremely disheartening. As a result, I would never ever recommend this recruiter to anyone. I have also filed a formal complaint with the State Attorney General of Illinois. A potential job candidate should NEVER be spoken to like that by a recruiter.
